Auditions Set for Little Shop

Posted 8-14-2012

The Star Players, Inc. will hold open auditions for their fall musical production, Little Shop of Horrors, Wednesday, August 15, 5 p.m. at the Star Theatre 121 W. Wyandot Avenue, Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Auditions are open to anyone age 16 and older.  Those auditioning will be asked to read an excerpt from the script and will be provided music from the show to audition.  For information on the show for audition information contact director Jennifer Hill 419-310-4121 or email hill_j@careyevs.org.  Key roles include the awkwardly lovable floral shop assistant Seymour Krelborn, his ditzy blond love interest Audrey, floral-shop-owning curmudgeon Mr. Mushnik, the comedic, yet dark, role of the dentist Orin Scrivello, and the smooth R&B vocal narrative guides, the Ronnettes.  At the center of the action is a series of 4 different sized puppets representing the man eating plant and star of the show Audrey II.  A puppeteer manipulates the puppets’ physical movements on stage as the plant grows into a gargantuan green monster.

Little Shop of Horrors is one of the longest-running off-Broadway shows of all time. This affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a house-hold name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.  This show tells the story of a down-and-out skid row floral assistant, who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon "Audrey II" grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination.

Little Shop of Horrors is a comedy horror rock musical based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, "Skid Row (Downtown)", "Somewhere That's Green", and "Suddenly, Seymour".  In addition to the original long-running 1982 off-Broadway production and subsequent Broadway production, the musical has been performed all over the world. Because of its small cast and relatively simple orchestrations, it has become popular with community theatre, school and other amateur groups.[1] The musical was also made into a 1986 film of the same name, directed by Frank Oz.  Little Shop of Horrors was originally produced by WPA Theatre (Kyle Renick, Producing Director). It was originally staged at the Orpheum Theatre in New York and directed by Howard Ashman. Little Shop of Horrors is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY, 10019.

Little Shop of Horrors is sponsored by Marion Technical College, The First Citizens National Bank, and The Ohio State University at Marion.
